Ventilation is essential for safety, but moving, conditioning, and exhausting large volumes of air requires significant energy.

How fume hoods are used, sash positions, ventilation settings, and air-change practices can all create opportunities for improvement — without compromising safety.

Cold storage

Freezers and refrigerators work around the clock. Temperature settings, maintenance, organization, aging equipment, unused samples, and everyday operating practices can affect how efficiently they run.

Plug loads

Computers. Monitors. Water baths. Heating blocks. Small instruments. Chargers. Peripheral equipment. Individually, they may not seem significant. Collectively — and running day after day — they can be.

Single-use plastics

Single-use materials are sometimes necessary. Sometimes there are practical alternatives. And sometimes simply changing how a product is purchased or used can reduce its footprint.

Red bag waste

Regulated waste costs more to handle and dispose of than ordinary waste.

When materials enter that waste stream unnecessarily, the lab may be paying a premium to dispose of something that never needed specialized handling.

Purchasing & inventory

Over-ordering, expired materials, duplicate supplies, excessive packaging, and products purchased out of habit can quietly consume budget.

The opportunity: Buy what the lab needs, use what it buys, and send less of it into expensive waste streams.

The chemistry itself can create opportunities.

Green chemistry isn’t simply about replacing one chemical with another. It looks at how materials, processes, quantities, hazards, waste, and environmental impact interact.

Depending on the work being performed, opportunities might include reducing material use, choosing safer alternatives, modifying processes, or preventing waste before it is created.

And any change has to work scientifically.

The opportunity: Look upstream — before waste, cost, and environmental impact become inevitable.

Every lab develops routines. Some exist because they’re necessary. Some solved a problem years ago. Some were inherited from someone who no longer works there. And some simply became,
“That’s how we do it.”

Those practices aren’t necessarily wrong. But occasionally, they’re expensive. Looking at familiar operations with fresh eyes can reveal opportunities that are almost impossible to see when you work around them every day.

Not every opportunity produces the same kind of return. One might reduce an energy bill. Another might lower disposal costs. Another could prevent unnecessary purchasing.
